Umoja
Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas.
Our program is a part of the Equity department at Santa Barbara City College; and much like the Center for Equity and Social Justice, also features a multitude of programming and events that are designed to further develop students academically, mentally, and professionally.
Umoja English Classes
Umoja is offering a dedicated English 110 class in the Spring 2023 semester!
This course will support students inside and outside of the classroom. Each class features a tutor and supportive faculty who teach from an Afro-centric perspective and have extensive office hours to offer students multiple ways to stay engaged and succeed. The class will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30 am -12:35 pm (CRN 65640). Students interested in this course will need an add code to register. Please contact Dr. Roxane Byrne, Coordinator of Equity, Diversity, and Cultural Competency or Andy Gil, Umoja Academic Counselor for an add code.
Village Space and More
Our village space is a place where our umoja community comes to spend time with one another, eat, study and build community! We offer snacks, quiet time for studying, community events and workshops. This is where our community becomes family.
Students can also receive a multitude of benefits from our Umoja program such as food vouchers, book grants, registration assistance, college tours, conference attendance and more!
The Umoja Center is located in CC-226 (inside of the Center for Equity and Social Justice).
Our hours for Fall 2022 are as follows:
Mondays - Thursdays 9:00 am - 5:00 pm excluding school holidays.
